Brush Up on Our Dentist's Expertise
Dr. Parul Sangwan DMD
I am originally from Jacksonville, Florida and am excited to now call New York my home! I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for my undergraduate studies and then committed to Teach for America (TFA) and taught at an underserved high school for 3 years. My teaching background helps me to explain orthodontic concepts to patients in a way that is easy to understand. Following my TFA service, I attended the University of Pennsylvania for my Doctorate in Dental Medicine and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society.

In dental school, I realized my passion for orthodontics and subsequently dedicated three extra years in specialty training in orthodontics. At Texas A&M College of Dentistry (formerly Baylor), I earned my Certificate in Orthodontics. At Texas A&M, I learned how to align teeth to maximize smile esthetics and the health of the bite. I also conducted orthodontic research and received the Thomas Graber Award of Special Merit from the American Association of Orthodontics for my thesis work on accelerated orthodontics. I continue to stay current with orthodontic research and am also proud to be a board-certified orthodontist. I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your dream smile!

FAQ

Questions
At what age should my child first visit an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. However, orthodontic treatment can be beneficial at any age.

How long does orthodontic treatment typically last?

Treatment time varies depending on individual needs, but most patients wear braces for 18-24 months. Some cases may be shorter or longer based on complexity.

Do braces hurt?

While braces don't hurt during application, you may experience some soreness for a few days after getting them and after adjustment appointments. This discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

What's the difference between traditional braces and Invisalign?

Traditional braces use metal brackets and wires to move teeth, while Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners.

What foods should I avoid with braces?

You should avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods that could damage braces, such as: hard candies, popcorn, nuts, chewy candies, hard pretzels, whole apples (unless cut into small pieces).

What should I do if a wire breaks or a bracket comes loose?

Contact our office immediately to schedule an appointment. In the meantime, if a wire is poking you, use orthodontic wax (provided in your starter kit) to cover it. Never try to fix broken brackets or wires yourself.

How do I clean my teeth properly with braces?

Brush after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Use floss threaders or water flossers daily to clean between brackets and under wires. We'll demonstrate proper cleaning techniques during your appointments.
