Lingual Braces

Introducing lingual braces: metal braces that go behind your teeth.

Most people think clear aligners are the only “invisible” alternative to metal braces, but lingual braces is another option to give you a nearly invisible look. Lingual braces work in the same way as conventional metal braces, except the wire and metal brackets are adhered to back of the teeth. This makes them nearly invisible! Lingual braces may be a good option if you’re looking for a nearly invisible alternative, but don’t want to deal with removable aligners. In many cases, they are just as effective as conventional braces in treating alignment issues. An orthodontist will still need to determine if they are right fit for you.

Common Questions

Why should I choose lingual braces over clear aligners?
Lingual braces allow you to have the nearly invisible look without needing to remove them to eat or drink and you don’t have to worry about losing or misplacing trays.
Are lingual braces comfortable?

As with all orthodontic treatment options, there is usually initial discomfort while your body gets used to the new sensation of the appliance in your mouth. For lingual braces, tongue pain is the most common type of discomfort. After a while, it should start to feel more comfortable. You may combat the discomfort with orthodontic wax, topical anesthetics (like Orajel™), and over the counter pain relievers.

Are there limitations to what lingual braces can treat?

Lingual braces can be used to treat most orthodontic issues. However, it may not be recommended in cases with deep bites, or overjets, because the pressure from the bite will force the brackets to fall out more easily. Our board-certified orthodontist will determine if you are a candidate for lingual braces.
